What is done : Up on the hoist, wheels are removed.
Wheel bearing grease must be applied to the wheel hubs to reduce heat generated
by frequent applications of the brake.
Retaining pins hold the disc pads in the calliper. New split pins are usually
fitted during replacement.
The calliper has one or more hydraulic cylinders containing pistons. Whenever
you press the brake pedal, the pistons exert pressure on the brake pads.
A bleed nipple is provided to ensure that any air entering the hydraulic lines
is "bleeded" off. Even a small amount of air in the system will
severely impair the operation of the brakes.
Disc surface cleaned and prepared. Pads are replaced and professionally fitted
and the vehicle is then road-tested.
Frequency : Whenever required, depending on kms travelled
Reason : We can’t overstate the importance of having your brakes
done regularly to have optimum braking capacity. Pads need to be replaced
before they wear out (and that depends on how you drive and whether you ride
with your foot on the brake, weather conditions etc), BUT once they get
metal-to-metal, you will hear and feel squeaking and you’ll then need
machining of your brake discs or drums done which is about $70 extra.
Replacing your brake pads regularly prevents this major potential problem.
